Build in the right order.
Self, Customer, Machine, then Team. Do them in that order and culture is what you get. Skip one and the business inherits the gap.
A framework for building from the inside out.
Most businesses don't fail on strategy. They fail on quiet misalignment between the founder, the customer, the machine, and the team.
TheMBP names that misalignment and installs the structure that makes a new pattern stick. It starts with you, not with strategy, headcount, or capital. Until a founder can say what their gift is, who it's for, and how it gets delivered without them, every business problem is the same problem in a different costume.
“The sequence is sacred. The path is not. People get stuck where they get stuck. I use friction as a flashlight and trace it back to the source.”
Self
The founder is the first system. Identity, gift, and emotional steadiness. The leverage lives here.
Before you build anything outside yourself, you build the observer inside: the ability to notice what you're thinking and feeling instead of being run by it.
Self work breaks reactivity and brings your gift into focus. It's slow, and it's the one pillar you can't skip, because every other problem in the business eventually leads back here.
“Every business problem is a self-problem in a different costume.”
Above or below the line
Are you leading from curiosity or from threat? It's the first awareness move, and teams pick it up fast once the leader does.
The daily return
Stillness, movement, and honest reflection, done daily. The practice is what you come back to when the week goes sideways.
Name the feeling
A shared vocabulary for what's actually happening inside. A leadership team that can name it can work with it.
Customer
Who your gift is for. Resonance over revenue.
Once the gift is clear, the next question is who it's for.
Most founders treat the customer as anyone who needs what they sell. In TheMBP, the customer is the specific person your gift is built to serve. Match the gift to that person and the messaging gets easier, the referrals get better, and the business stops chasing work it shouldn't take.
“When founders fight about who the business is for, it almost always traces back to a gift that was never named clearly enough for the customer to recognize themselves in it.”
“If you chum the water with one message and bait the hook with another, you catch a fish you didn't attract. It feels like winning while you reel it in. Then the expectations don't match, for the client or your team.”
Machine
Hard systems and soft systems that deliver the gift without the founder in every room.
Once you know the gift and who it's for, you build the Machine. It has two layers, and both have to be tuned. Most firms build one and wonder why the company breaks when the founder leaves the room.
“The Hard Machine can run without heart. The Soft Machine can run without process. A firm that lasts needs both, tuned together.”
Process and measures
Tools, workflows, SOPs, decision rights, and KPIs that track outcomes instead of activity.
How people work together
Psychological safety, communication habits, conflict norms, and the shared language a team uses when things get hard.
Founder and COO
The COO runs the Machine. When the founder and COO are aligned on Self, the rest of the firm can feel it.
Team
The people who carry the gift. Last in the order, never in importance.
Only after the Machine is designed do you build or reshape the team. Most founders hire first and hope the right person will fix things.
Build the team last and the Machine tells you exactly who you need, which strengths matter, and how each seat serves the gift. Assessments like Kolbe show natural wiring, so role mismatches surface before they get expensive. Your team comes last because everything they need from you has to come first.
“Healthy teams need a clear Self, a defined Customer, and a built Machine, in that order.”
Culture
Not the starting point. What emerges when the first four hold.
Culture isn't a perk, a poster, or an annual offsite. It's what people repeatedly experience inside the business, measured against what its leaders say.
When the Self is grounded, the Customer is known, the Machine is built, and the Team is set up to carry it, culture is the result. It's also the only thing that keeps a firm steady after the founder steps back. If it feels off, something upstream is leaking. The diagnostic finds which pillar.
The Mindful Business Practice.
Law firms, accounting practices, consultancies. Same paradigm, tuned for firms where the product is the people and the partners are inside the delivery.
Paradigm is the idea. Practice is putting it to work, and the practice you return to. I built it inside a plaintiff's firm I co-founded and still help run, where we've grown revenue 4x since 2023, from low seven figures to eight.
